Jake's, Mary’s and Sam’s fingers all danced across their respective keyboards with a methodical rhythm, each keystroke digging further into the Councilor Richard’s past. Searching for dirt, sifting through it, looking for anything that would give a hint of an opening, or else point them to one, whatever shape or form that would take. The room was cast in an uneasy half-light that filtered through the blinds, dust motes swirling in the beams.

Mary sat upright, rolling her shoulders in an attempt to alleviate some of the tension which had settled their, making it its home. Richards' alibi seemed unassailable, a fortress of convenience constructed with the precision of a man who knew how to play the system. But Mary didn't believe in impenetrable defenses; there was always a weak spot, a hidden passage left unchecked.

Her mind was a carousel of possibilities, spinning faster with each passing moment. She recalled every detail of the case files, each victim's face etched into her memory. Natalie and Sarah, their lives snuffed out by an unseen hand; Ava and Lisa, gone without a trace. It all circled back to Richards, his opposition to the flood defense bill, his heated exchange with Lisa, the gardening truck tied to his shell company.

Mary's train of thought shattered when her phone vibrated against the desk, the sound unforgiving in the quiet room. She glanced at the caller ID—Carla Simmons—and felt a familiar knot of apprehension tighten in her gut.

She reached for the phone, her movements measured, somehow knowing that whatever awaited on the other end of the line was not going to be good. In fact, it was going to be extremely bad. The device felt heavy in her hand as she punched accept and lifted it to her ear.
